Frequently asked questions

Everything worth knowing about the Slovenian vignette — before you set off.

Basics

What is a vignette and when do I need it?

A vignette is the fee for using Slovenian motorways (A1–A5). It is mandatory for vehicles up to 3.5 t. The Slovenian e-vignette has been fully electronic since 2021 — nothing to stick on, ANPR cameras read plates around the clock. Without a valid vignette you risk a fine of up to €800.

Is the vignette a windscreen sticker?

No. The Slovenian vignette is fully electronic. There is nothing to stick on — the system links the fee to the registration plate and checks it automatically by camera.

For what periods can I buy a vignette?

You can choose 7 days, 30 days or a year (365 days from the start date). Slovenia has NO 1-day vignette — the shortest is 7 days. Motorcycles (Class 1): 7 days, 6 months or a year.

Can I set a future start date for the vignette?

Yes. At purchase you choose the validity start date — today or weeks or months ahead. Useful when you plan a trip in advance.

Purchase and payment

How do I buy a vignette step by step?

You choose the class and period, enter the registration plate, start date and email, and pay. It takes about two minutes, with no account. You receive the confirmation by email.

Which payment methods do you accept?

Card (Visa, Mastercard), Apple Pay and Google Pay. Payments are handled by Stripe — the same provider used by large online stores.

In which currency do I pay?

You pay in euro (EUR). The final amount is shown before payment.

Is your price the same as in the official system?

Our price may be higher than in the official system because we are an intermediary service — the price includes the DARS road toll and order handling. You can always buy directly at evinjeta.dars.si.

How quickly does the vignette start working?

After payment we register the vignette in the official system — usually 10-15 minutes after the payment clears. You receive a confirmation by email. If you set a future start date, it becomes valid from that date.

Slovenia

How much does a Slovenia vignette cost?

The cheapest is the 7-day vignette — Slovenia has no 1-day option. The periods are 7 days, 30 days and a year. The price depends on the class: 2A (car, height below 1.30 m over the front axle), 2B (taller van or MPV, almost twice the price), Class 1 (motorcycle). From about €23.50. Exact prices are in the pricing page.

Which Slovenian roads require a vignette?

The vignette applies on motorways A1–A5 (A1 Šentilj–Maribor–Ljubljana–Koper, A2 Karawanks–Ljubljana–Croatian border and Bled, A3 toward Italy, A4/A5 toward Croatia and Hungary). National and city roads are free. Note: the Karawanken tunnel has a separate toll (~8.50 € one way), not covered by the vignette.

What is the fine for no vignette in Slovenia?

Control is purely electronic (ANPR cameras) — there is no on-the-spot ticket. The fine can reach €800. The wrong class (for example 2A instead of 2B) is also penalised.

Does the Slovenian vignette work in other countries?

No. The Slovenian vignette applies only on Slovenian motorways. For other countries you need a separate vignette — Slovak at e-znamka.org, Czech at e-dalnice.org, Hungarian at e-matrica.org, Romanian at e-rovinieta.org, Bulgarian at bg-vineta.org.

Vehicles and categories

Does a motorcycle need a vignette in Slovenia?

Yes. In Slovenia a motorcycle belongs to Class 1 and is paid (not exempt). The periods are 7 days, 6 months and a year.

And a trailer?

Trailers are exempt in Slovenia — you do not buy a separate vignette for a trailer. The towing vehicle needs its own vignette according to its class.

Which vehicles do you handle?

Vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW: Class 2A (car, height below 1.30 m over the front axle), Class 2B (van or MPV 1.30 m or more), Class 1 (motorcycle). Vehicles over 3.5 t are billed in the DarsGo system.

I have a camper — what about the vignette?

A camper up to 3.5 t is classed by height over the front axle — most campers exceed 1.30 m, so Class 2B. Heavier campers (over 3.5 t) use DarsGo — write to us and we will advise.

After purchase

What should I do if I entered the wrong registration plate?

Email us as soon as possible at info@e-vinjeta.org with the order number and the correct plate. If the vignette is not yet registered, we will try to correct the data. After registration a change may be impossible — so check the data before paying.

Can I get a refund?

The vignette is a digital service delivered immediately, so the right of withdrawal expires on registration (you agree to this at purchase). If the order has not yet been fulfilled, write to us — we will check the options.

I did not receive a confirmation email — what should I do?

Check the spam and promotions folders. If after a few minutes there is no email, write to info@e-vinjeta.org with the plate and the email used at purchase — we will check the order status.

Are you a government site?

No. We are an independent commercial intermediary service. We are not linked to any authority or toll operator. The official system is evinjeta.dars.si (operator DARS) — you can also buy there yourself.

Routes and transit

I am going on holiday to Croatia — do I need a Slovenian vignette?

Most routes to the Croatian coast (Istria, Dalmatia) run through Slovenia. On Slovenian motorways (A1 toward Koper or A2 toward the Croatian border) you need a Slovenian vignette. Remember separate vignettes for the transit countries.

To Ljubljana or the coast — which vignette should I buy?

From Central Europe you reach Slovenia via Austria (the Karawanken tunnel on the A2 — separate toll ~8.50 €). You need a Slovenian vignette plus an Austrian one (asfinag.at). The shortest Slovenian vignette lasts 7 days — there is no 1-day option.

I am transiting through Slovenia further south — what about the vignette?

On Slovenian motorways you need a Slovenian vignette, regardless of distance. Croatia next uses section tolls (no vignette) — check before entering.

I only drive a short motorway stretch — must I have a vignette?

Yes. The vignette applies on the whole A1–A5 network, whether you drive one kilometre or 200 km. The shortest available period is 7 days.

Does the Slovenian vignette work in Austria or Croatia?

No. Each country has its own system. For Austria buy in the official system (asfinag.at), for Slovakia at e-znamka.org, for Czechia at e-dalnice.org, for Hungary at e-matrica.org, for Romania at e-rovinieta.org, for Bulgaria at bg-vineta.org. Croatia uses section tolls (no vignette).

Where is it best to buy the vignette before the trip?

Online, in advance — before you set off. That way the vignette is ready before you reach the border. You can set the start date to your travel day.

Company car, leasing, rental

I have a leased car — can I buy a vignette?

Yes. The vignette is tied to the registration plate, not the owner. Whether the car is yours, leased or financed — you enter the plate and that is it.

I drive a company car — to whom is the vignette registered?

The vignette is linked to the vehicle plate, not the driver or company. You enter the company car plate and it works the same as a private one.

I rented a car — who buys the vignette?

Check the contract — some rental companies include the vignette, some do not. If not, you buy it yourself with the rental car plate. The vignette is valid regardless of the owner.

I changed the registration plates — what about the vignette?

The vignette is tied to a specific plate. After a plate change the old vignette no longer applies. If you are planning this, buy for the current plate or wait for the new one.

I am selling the car with a valid vignette — does it pass to the buyer?

It stays tied to the registration plate. If the new owner keeps the same plates, the vignette still works. On a plate change it expires for the old number.

Practical situations

I bought the vignette at night — will it work right away?

Yes. Orders are processed automatically, at any time. After payment we register the vignette in the official system usually within 10-15 minutes, regardless of the hour. The confirmation arrives by email.

How can I check whether my vignette is valid?

After purchase you receive a confirmation email with the data (plate, period). You can also verify the status in the official system evinjeta.dars.si by registration plate.

Will I get an invoice for the vignette?

We operate as a non-VAT company, so we do not issue VAT invoices. You receive an electronic purchase confirmation by email with the amount and order data — sufficient as proof of purchase.

Is the vignette checked at the border?

There are no permanent border checks in the Schengen area. The vignette is checked by ANPR cameras along the motorways — they read plates automatically, around the clock.

What if the vignette expires during the trip?

Driving tolled roads after expiry risks a fine. If you return after a longer stay, buy a new vignette with a start date for your return day — you can do it online from anywhere.

What is the difference between Class 2A and 2B?

Slovenia classes vehicles by height over the front axle, not by weight. Class 2A is below 1.30 m (most cars), Class 2B is 1.30 m or more (vans, MPVs, some SUVs) and costs almost twice as much. Check your vehicle height before buying — the wrong class can mean a fine.
