Transit through Slovenia to Croatia — vignettes

e-vinjeta.org9 min read

If your trip runs through Slovenia to Croatia, one charge is not enough. Slovenian motorways need a Slovenian vignette, the Karawanke tunnel has a separate toll, and Croatia itself charges tolls at booths. Here is what you pay and where, on the route from the north to Croatia.

The Slovenian vignette for Slovenian motorways

On the Slovenian leg you need a valid vignette for every motorway (A1–A5) and expressway (H) you use. For a car the smallest option is the weekly vignette (2A €23.50), valid 7 days — enough for transit there and back. See the full prices and classes in the complete Slovenia vignette guide and choose the period on the Slovenia vignette page.

Main routes towards Croatia

  • Towards Zagreb: A2 Karawanke – Ljubljana – Novo Mesto – Obrežje, where you cross the border at Bregana. The classic transit route from central Europe.
  • Towards eastern Croatia / Slavonia: A1 to Ljubljana, then A2 towards Obrežje, or from the east A4 Slivnica – Gruškovje.
  • Towards Istria and Rijeka: A1 towards Koper, then to the Istrian border crossing. A popular summer direction for Pula.

On all these sections the Slovenian vignette is mandatory from the first kilometre of motorway.

The Karawanke tunnel — a separate toll

If you arrive from Austria, you first cross the Karawanke tunnel. Its toll is not included in the Slovenian vignette — you pay it separately (around €8.50 for a car), at the booth or online. Immediately after the tunnel the A2 motorway begins, where you need a valid vignette.

Croatia — tolls at booths

Croatia does not use a vignette on most motorways, but a classic toll at booths: you take a ticket on entry and pay on exit by distance travelled. So you do not need a vignette for Croatia; just have a payment method (card or cash) ready at the exit booth.

If you come from Austria

For the Austrian leg you need an Austrian vignette (digital or sticker), which is a separate system you arrange in Austria. The Slovenian vignette applies only on Slovenian motorways — it does not extend across the border and does not cover the Austrian or Croatian network.

Summary

For transit through Slovenia to Croatia you need a Slovenian vignette for the Slovenian motorways, a separate toll for the Karawanke tunnel (if you come from Austria), and tolls at booths in Croatia. Buy the Slovenian vignette in advance on the Slovenia vignette page and set the start date to the day you drive onto the motorway. That keeps the border crossing simple.
